Record Store Day 2019 will take place on Saturday 13th April 2019. Record Store Day is the one day of the year when over 200 independent record shops across the UK come together and special vinyl releases are made exclusively for the day. Here are 8 releases that I think will be snapped up quickly on the day.
1. The Courteeners – Falcon
After last year’s success and reissue of their debut album St. Jude on its 10th anniversary, this year Liam Fray and the rest of the band have decided to reissue their equally anticipated second album Falcon. Being pressed on 12” white coloured vinyl the album and featuring fan favourites The Opener and You Overdid It Doll; this album is sure to be in high demand amongst shoppers. The Manchester band have a very busy 2019 instore with their 6th studio album expected anytime soon; a huge hometown gig at Heaton Park in June in front of 50,000 people and a number of festival headline slots including Kendal Calling and Tramlines.
2. Bang Bang Romeo – Cemetry / Creep
Yorkshire’s hotly tipped trio Bang Bang Romeo are excited to get their first physical release this Record Store Day with a special vinyl version of the single ‘Cemetery’. The B-side ‘Creep’ is a cover of the Radiohead track from their 1993 album ‘Pablo Honey’. Having recently finished their first headline tour in February, they have been announced as support to P!NK on her European stadium tour stopping at venues such as Wembley, Anfield and Hampden Park.
3. Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody Picture Disc & Bohemian Rhapsody / I’m In Love With My Car
Cheating a little bit here, there are two Prince records being released for record store day. Celebrating the success of ‘ Bohemian Rhapsody’, this limited edition 2LP picture disc set includes original Queen and Smile recordings from the soundtrack of the movie. The bundle also includes a never before released set from Live Aid.
The second Queen release is a limited edition 7″ single that features ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with original B-side ‘I’m In Love With My Car’. This coloured vinyl release features an exclusive cover and tracks remastered by Bob Ludwig.
4. Blossoms – Cool Like You
As a follow up to their 2017 self-titled album, Blossoms came back with indie pop LP ‘Cool Like You’. In support of Record Store Day 2019, Blossoms release new track ‘I’ve Seen The Future’ alongside their critically acclaimed second album ‘Cool Like You’ on white vinyl. The second LP on this limited-edition double vinyl features a range of live covers from Blossoms’ BBC Sessions, including a cover of The Stone Roses – ‘She Bangs The Drums’. The Stockport 5-piece are headlining their first stadium show in June at Stockport County with support from The Coral and The Blinders (plus more) and head out on a European tour with the Kooks.
5. Idles – Meat EP / Meta EP
Idles are an English punk rock band formed in Bristol in 2009. Their debut album, Brutalism, was released in 2017 to critical acclaim, as was their second album Joy as an Act of Resistance in 2018. This vinyl release of both MEAT EP & META EP is the first time it has been released on Vinyl and it is also the first time META EP has been released in any physical format. Idles are a band that are constantly touring and aren’t stopping anytime soon, continuing till the end of august, there’s plenty of opportunity to go and see them, so go and do it. Now!
6. Chase and Status – No More Idols
The full album is to be released on LP for the very first time, No More Idols will be pressed on 180gram yellow heavyweight vinyl. Initially released in 2011, No More Idols has since gone on to become a 2x UK Platinum selling album, and includes UK #5 Blind Faith, #9 End Credits, #11 Let You Go.
7. Sam Fender – Play God
BRITS Critics Choice winner Sam Fender releases a special RSD exclusive 7″ single with his most recent single ‘Play God’ and a live recording of ‘Hyper Sonic Missiles’ from his 2018 London headline show. Sam soon goes out on a sold-out UK tour in May including dates at Manchester O2 Ritz and two nights at London’s O2 Shepard’s Bush Empire.
8. Ian Brown – From Chaos To Harmony / Black Roses
Ian Brown, the front man of The Stone Roses, releases an exclusive 2x 7″ Vinyl which features “From Chaos To Harmony” and “Black Roses” in celebration of RSD. Both tracks are lifted from his recently arrived solo album, “Ripples”, his first solo material in over nine years since the recent break of The Stone Roses. Featuring on the second 7” are the tracks “Soul Satisfaction” and “Ripples”.
With just two weeks to go till the big day, make sure to get down and support your local record and artists in the process. Expect long queues so get down there early to make sure you get the records you’re after as they are limited stock and each store differs, so I would advise asking if they have them in advance to avoid disappointment.
