Sam Fender, the 2019 winner of the Critics Choice Awards, has taken the music world by the reins and has steered it into a new, refreshing, unique direction which, music lovers are so excited about!! Sam is a 22 year old from Newcastle who has been writing music since the age of 13. His music career kick-started when Owaine Davies (Ben Howard’s manager) found potential in the songs Sam was creating. In 2013, he was signed up to a major music label, Polydor.
So, why is Sam Fender doing all the right things in the music industry?
Firstly, he is recognising social issues and articulates what we are all thinking through his lyrics. Trying to make sense of the world, you can almost hear his thought process searching for the answers, or at least, trying to find a way to express how he sees the world in his eyes. Sam writes about government surveillance, fake news, suicide and sexual harassment with his alternative rock, indie style of music.
Secondly, the single ‘Dead Boys’ was produced after Sam had lost a few close friends to suicide. In an interview with NME, Sam explained that he came to the realisation and understanding that this is a present issue amongst men. The reasoning behind this single is to empower individuals to speak out if they are struggling with mental health. In this interview, Sam goes on to say that the view of the man is outdated which could be a part to play in the rising statistics of male suicide. “I genuinely think it’s toxic masculinity and the idea of what a man is supposed to be. This really archaic, out of date idea of how a man is supposed to conduct himself. I think that’s what kills men, genuinely”. The power of his writing has allowed people to understand that it is okay to cry. Sam has expressed to NME that the feedback has been overwhelming due to people getting into contact with him about their own struggles with mental health.
Sam Fender is a force to be reckoned with. By singing what he can see in the world makes us, as listeners, sit back and digest the beauty of his work, forming our own thoughts and opinions on the current issues within our society.
An album is yet to be released but when it does, it’s going to be the best album of the year!! UK tour starts Monday 6th May, 2019 at London O2 Shepherds Bush.
